End of last year British alternative rock band Supergrass left EMI's Parlophone Records - the label they had been signed to ever since the band's inception in 1994. At the time the decision was made, bass player and Supergrass spokesman Mick Quinn told the BBC that Parlophone had changed a lot since private equity firm Terra Firma took over EMI in May 2007 - and ending the 13-year relationship was a mutual decision.
Supergrass released six albums with Parlophone, Diamond Hoo Ha (2008) produced by Nick Launey being the last one. Check Wikipedia for detailed info.
Being on their own now, new Supergrass material will be released on 'Supergrass Records' - owned and run by the band members themselves. The track "Rebel in You" from the last album was already released on this label as a limited edition 7" white vinyl pressing last summer because EMI refused to fund its release on Parlophone.
Today, Supergrass Records is not a side project any more. Mick Quinn, the newly appointed band manager, was kind enough to answer some questions about it.
Supergrass has always been under the wings of a Major label. How does it feel to be "on your own" now? Aren't you scared - not even a tiny bit?
"Well, in the current climate I'd find it a lot more scary being signed to EMI, it's like some lumbering old oil tanker that's heading for the rocks."
