Sellaband - the music website trying to break down the fences existing in the music industry - started this year with a news posting headlining, "The new year comes with a resolution as well: in 2008 SellaBand, the company, will strive to be as open and transparent as we possibly can." Founded in 2006 by Dutchmen Johan Vosmeijer, Pim Betist and Dagmar Heijmans, Sellaband now has over 7000 artists trying to get fans involved with getting there. Read more about the concept here.
Translating fan supported content to the music industry is not a new thing. It's done by TV shows such as "Idols" and "Popstar" and there have been several on-line initiatives similar to Sellaband. But mostly without much success.
Launchalabel.com turned out to be less than just an idea and never made it. Ishouldbesolucky.com was backed by Mike Stock (part of the legendary 1980s music partnership Stock, Aitken and Waterman) but that didn't make the difference. Yet another site Slicethepie seems to be doing fine.
We asked Sellaband's Managing Director Johan Vosmeijer some questions, but not before first mentioning the above websites to him. Let's see how open he gets!
You must be doing something right! With the competition watching we can imagine you're not going to reveal your secrets - but are you on target with your business plan?
"We are definitely on target with our business plan. First, please let it be known that SellaBand debuted way before slicethepie.com and as far as we know, any of the other competition.
