MY SLICE OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

Sat, December 29, 2007

On Slicethepie any artist can upload their music, music fans then get to work earning money from scouting this music and writing reviews. The highest rated artists go forward to raise funds from their existing fanbase, as well as finding new financial support from the site’s community of fan owned ‘record labels’. The more finance a fan provides to an artist, the greater financial return they can secure from the sales of singles and albums over a 2 year period.

Not only can fans finance multiple artists, they can also generate cash returns by speculating on the number of future album sales by trading in and out of their bands on a fully fledged trading exchange.

By splintering the existing industry model into a million one-to-one direct artist/fan relationships Slicethepie finally ends the co-dependency between emergent talent and record labels. No longer will artists have to wait to be spotted – even if they have only modest support they can now achieve whatever level of success they are capable of.

Since its launch in June, over 250,000 independent reviews of unsigned artist's music have been submitted by site users. Using sophisticated algorithms Slicethepie gauges the accuracy of every single review made by each 'Scout' and this governs how much influence a scout has in selecting an artist for financing (and how much they get paid). Now this information can be accessed by every user via Facebook now that Slicethepie released its first applications for Facebook last November.

A second application allows users to show tracks they have added to their Slicethepie Watchlist with their Facebook friends and indicates which have been 'tipped' to secure finance.

David Courtier-Dutton, Slicethepie founder said:

"The vast majority of Slicethepie users already have a Facebook profile and this gave us a unique opportunity to allow users to build their own scouting leagues. Not only is it great fun, but this competitive aspect will further increase the quality of the reviews and benefit the thousands of artists on the site whilst making the Scout Room process even more efficient at identifying tomorrow's music superstars."

Since its launch, 6 artists have been financed through Slicethepie: Gilkicker, The Alps, The Skies, Miranda Barber, Scars on 45 and Katrina Bello - raising over £100,000 from music fans and music investors.
