Basteroid - Sebastian Riedl - one of the driving forces behind the German techno label Areal (and creator of all the colorful Areal record-sleeves) will release his album "Upset Ducks" this month. He also just moved to Berlin and told us, "his world is kind of upside down at the moment''. So we're happy he made some time to answer our questions.

You manage to combine sounds that seem incompatible into something sweet and acid sounding at the same time. How do you come up with such combinations? Is it a matter of mining your sample library, or are all those sounds made by you especially to fit the track?

''Basically, I just kind of jam around and there is always something coming up that sounds unavoidable for me and then I just work with that. So what sounds incompatible for you, maybe sounds totally natural for me. I must say I am not a very structured person, so all my music kind of just happens to me. I am also not very good in making sound libraries - if I make them, most of the time I forget about them. I really prefer to make new sounds all the time when I am working.''

What computer setup do you use for production and what are your favorite plug-ins?

''I use Magix Samplitude and a little Ableton Live at times. My favorite plug-ins are pretty much all from Toby Bear.''
