Chris Cowie, DJ/producer behind many classic tracks of the Hook and Bellboy catalogue, is now the man behind the re-launch of both labels he originally started back in 1992.
"A number of people have told me over the past few years that the contribution towards dance music made by the Hook and Bellboy labels is too important to be lost because it inspired and influenced a lot of producers, DJs, music lovers, and clubbers worldwide and continues to do so. I came to believe there's enough truth in this to give Hook-Bellboy a second life. When I think of the amount of people that would phone up the labels office just for a chat - but were probably trying to squeeze some information as to what made us so successful - sort of amazes me now. There were some seriously major players in the scene that would regularly call and there were a number of up and coming names then who are now major players. The reasons for this are many but there is no doubt that compared to our peers, our releases just sounded a little more cutting edge and unique.
"We also received a huge amount of press worldwide and, without trying, seemed to project an image of all knowing serious music people. The reality was that we just did our own thing and with me in particular - I just went in to the studio and made tracks without ever paying much attention to what other people were releasing. On the PR front we did do some things that were a little ahead of their time like the on location DJ mixed Ben Nevis CD which was a good bit before other labels did their own style of on location DJ mix CDs.
