When you think Psychedelic Dance music, there are few names that come to mind instantly. Eat Static is such a name! About 20 years ago two members of Ozric Tentacles - Merv Pepler and Joie Hinton - decided to go electronic and they never stopped releasing music with an edge. If you've ever seen them playing live you know these guys can make you feel like you've never felt before. Think Alien and think Sounds: Think Eat Static. Amazing! Their 21st! CD album is coming out soon. So we had a chat with Merv and asked him some things we always wanted to know.
It has been silent for a while around "Eat Static". Now a new album is expected to hit the stores any time and you started touring again. What have you been up to the past few years?
"I have been doing a lot of different styles/projects over the last five years mainly as a creative outlet for the different styles of music I like doing. I have still done quite a few individual Eat Static tracks but these all went out on various compilations for labels like TipWorld, Twisted, Solstice and Interchill. I didn't just want to collect a bunch of Static Tunes together that were written over that long period as I like an album to have a feel running through it - and we have been going so long now that it seemed sensible to do seperate named projects plus I would get the chance to work with other people. So i have The Flexitones (with Propellerheads' Will White), Metal Sharon (with Simon Posford), Hi-Fi Companions (with Steve Jolliffe of Tangerine Dream), Dendron (my solo breaks/drum'n bass), Nodens Ictus (with Ed Wynne/Ozric Tentacles) and MX Experiments (with Xavier Morel/Juno Reactor)."
