Deadbeat: The New Dub-Tech Master

DEADBEAT: THE NEW DUB-TECH MASTER

"From a musical perspective I've always been inspired by those people who used music as a pathway out of extreme hardship."

Deadbeat is Scott Monteith - a long time Montrealer who is now residing in Berlin.

Best known for his fusion of jazzy Minimal Techno, Dubstep, and deep bass-filled grooves, he's been recognized a hot producer for several years now. So it was little surprise to us Scott won third place in the Dubstep/Grime category in the first annual Beatport Music Awards this year.

His new album, 'Roots and Wire', is out now on Wagon Repair and showcases his talent through a lot of different styles. From Dub and Reggae, to tribal driven Tech-house and tracks that will take you back to the Dub-techno sound era of Basic Channel.

Gifted with an excellent feeling for vibes and rhythms, Deadbeat is a true Dub master at work. And the guy hasn't even been to Jamaica! What about his roots and sound?

It's amazing how you blend together all these different styles. Can you tell a bit about your (musical) background and interest in music?

I had a fairly common musical upbringing I think. Various instrument lessons like piano and guitar, which I never stuck with long enough to get any good at as a kid. Exploring my parents rather warped record collection of various Swing Jazz, bad Blues, Rock and Christmas records, with the odd gem like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and the Doors Strange Days thrown in for good measure. Jamming in friends' basements trying to play bass and fooling around with synthesizers as a teenager aided by my first experiments with drugs.
