Figure is Josh Gard from Indiana (USA). We stumbled upon some of his remixes and wanted to know more about them. So we dropped him a note for an interview and first asked him to introduce himself.
Who actually is Figure?
"Before I am Figure, I am a bboy golden age hiphop head and dusty finger type of guy than I am a electro DJ as I'm tagged. I wake up and listen to stuff like Schooly D, releases from P&P and old mr Magic recordings before I ever load up some blog house tunes.
I started all of this to make sampled beats and do turntablism work, which I still do quite much under the alias Silver English. But Figure is a bass work and the live sets are a mix of French house and disco house and all of my friends music (Ghetto Division and Brooklyn Fire records to be exact). Day by day I am going further and further back to my roots and reasons of starting my journey into music."
Although your recent remixes have been well received, they didn't yet open the doors to bigtime success. How do you hope to get there?
"Well I think as with any artist, to get anywhere with a future you have to be also putting out original music that is either full circle with DJs or is a new sound for that genre. The originals that I'm working on now are walking on a line between that and more purist DJ music that hopefully will stand the test of these month to month blog star times. Just for a example, I have a disco house group Le Principle that is focusing on more classic sounds and samples, which is music that seems to stick around longer."
