Oliver Bondzio and Ramon Zenker from Germany are Techno duo "Hardfloor". Their distinctive acid house sound is credited to their virtuoso skill at manipulating the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer. They reputedly use up to six of these babies at once.
They may have been criticised doing remixes for big name artists (New Order, More Kante, Underworld) but with their own releases - now at their own independent label HRDFLR - they've always explored the less commercial spectrum of Techno music.
They released a new album quite recently, and we wanted to find out about their TB-303 addiction for once and for all. We spoke with Oliver Bondzio about their latest album, the groupies and their nice life with the 303s.
The title of your new album "The Life We Choose" suggests a deeper meaning. Any comments here? What does it sound like??
"No comments - the music should speak for itself. But maybe when we're waiting another couple of hours after the connecting flight on the third day in a row on tour, than you have to think: THIS is "The Life We Choose".
"Nah, just 'kiddin' - we're pretty happy with the shit we're doing and we really appreciate all customers from our label and artists we've remixed and promoters who've booked us. Without them we where not doing this anymore.
"Since we had a big hit with "Acperience 1" in 1992, people called us acid gods or whatever - but after a while we were bored about using this machine ONLY. So we had a phase where we created nearly two albums with less or almost no 303's.
