YELLE: LOVE AND FRENCH CHANSONS

"I think there were women into music at the beginning of last century but they were not taken seriously because they were women!"

Yelle (a feminized acronym of "You Enjoy Life") wanted to be a singer since she was a little girl. Born Julie Budet, she grew up in the small coastal town of Saint-Brieuc, Bretagne, France.

Raised in a musical environment Yelle was exposed to bands such as The Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd and Jacques Brel at a very young age. As a teenager she was listening to Madonna, Blur, Cindy Lauper, Prince and other Pop orientated acts, and as a student she joined two bands just for fun.

Things started becoming more serious when she decided to make music with her producer friend GrandMarnier in 2005.

She rose to fame on MySpace when she posted a song titled "Short Dick Cuizi", making fun of Cuizinier, a member of the Parisian hip-hop group TTC. The song is now called “Je veux te voir” for reasons we guess are related to Yelle being signed by EMI's French sub-label Source. Call it label policy :)

Yelle's star rose ever since and she has just returned home from her USA October tour. With Japan as next continent to conquer Yelle was happy to answer some questions.

Your MySpace says, "I have so much love to give." I guess making music is a great way for you to express that feeling. So you must be happy with your success. On the other hand - success always forces artists to keep bit more distance from the world around them and that can become an obstacle in giving love. Does that make you sad?
