QUESTIONS FOR PENNY AND ASHTRAY

"Penny and Ashtray" are Tamotsu Ide & Momoyo Kubo from Osaka (Japan). While back they mailed us one of their tracks featuring a hard to resist 8-bit sound. So we checked their MySpace and got somewhat intrigued. They seem to be on a mission in one of Isaac Asimov's short stories :)

Time for some questions!

Who are the people behind the bleeps? Tell us a about yourselves.

"Fortunately we both grew up surrounded by great music, films and books. So, we could learn a lot from the great achievements of the 20th century. Kafka, Joyce, Godard, Kubrick, Warhol and Gainsbourg. On the other hand, we have always been playing with Nintendo game consoles. From Famicom and GameBoy in the 80s to DS and Wii now."

Yeah, your MySpace says you're inspired by Nintendo, Casio, Roland - John Travolta and Linus Torvalds. Why Linus Torvalds?

"As everybody knows, Linux is a revolution brought by the open source philosophy of Linus Torvalds. We guess most of Linux enthusiasts are so critical of other operating systems such as Windows, but he is quite calm about the controversy. He said "just for fun" and also quoted the word of Sir Isaac Newton - "if I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants." This is the reason why we admire him."

The type of music you make is gaining popularity every day. Recently YMCK played in Holland. Do you know them?
