Dance music fans will instantly recognize Umek’s tracks “You Might Hear Nothing,” “Second To None,” and “Gatex,” the latter of which was huge in the UK and licensed worldwide in 2001, selling more than 30,000 copies.
Now, Umek is set to release his next long awaited full-length studio album - Responding To Dynamic - on February 9th, 2010. From the sinister drone of “Utopian Societies” to the hypnotic layers of “Uncouth Manners,” from the high-tech tension of “Legitimate Priest” to the filthy crescendo of the title track, the album is clearly aimed at techno lovers.
A DJ and producer since the early 90’s, Umek’s style has ranged from brutal alternative electronic sounds to proper club anthems and includes all variations in between. With support from fellow global DJ producers Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Sander Kleinenberg and others who play Umek’s tunes in their live sets, he became one of Slovenia's biggest dance music stars.
In the studio, Umek is not a sentimental producer. He said, “I used to have 40 analog synths and every compressor you can imagine. I was doing music with Atari Cubase and such, but I’m totally digital now. I’m using really cool Apogee soundcards and a super powerful Mac computer. That’s everything I need.”
We had an interview with Umek earlier this year and when we asked him about the upcoming album he said , ''Hehe, I am working on it. The first album didn't make it and so it's still on my computer. It will never come out. It looks like the 2nd one is about to face the same destiny, but 3 is a lucky number, so I am sure it will be big, hehe.''
