Puppet shows, opera, theater, laptops, poets, live musicians... just a few words to describe the life of Joemca, a talented singer/songwriter from NYC who's just released his debut EP that he co-produced with frequent Yoko Ono collaborator Rob Stevens.
Listen to it and feel it...
What's Joemca & Poets about?
"I named the band “the Poets” because I love poetry, and I feel that anyone that plays with me helps bring out the poetry that I think is in the music. As a songwriter and as a singer, I want to reach out to people, and move them and hopefully inspire. That's the purpose of the band."
When I listen to your music I hear U2, Depeche Mode, the Smashing Pumpkins... who are your biggest influences?
"Well to start with - musically, Sam Cooke is my absolute favorite of all times. And Dylan Thomas is my absolute favorite poet of all times. But when I was working on the EP material, I was listening heavily to experimental and electronic stuff like Oval, Opiate, Susumu Yokota and contemporary composers like Morton Feldman - stuff along those lines. That was kind of new to me at the time so I was trying to blend things that I already knew well with things that were new inspirations. Classical music has always been my primary root since I grew up playing the violin. The direction of my musical choices came from there, certainly at least for the EP. But I do love everything from the Pumpkins to Dylan to Jeff Buckley to Wu-Tang to Ella to DJ Krush to Heiffetz to Afro-Cuban to old-time Gospel to Reggae to Filipino folk."
