BALANCE 014: JORIS VOORN

Tue, December 16, 2008

manager to Stomp, an Australian entertainment company.

"We've always admired Joris from a distance (especially being from Australia) and are huge fans of his production work and past mixes that he's released, so after some deep thought about the direction of the series, we really wanted to freshen things up and after contemplating a few other DJs to work with, the one name that always came-up on our wish list was Joris.

"The timing couldn't have been better, as Joris wanted to work on a mix CD project also, so after a few conversations we all agreed to put our clogs on and go for it."

We also wanted Tom's opinion on the tracklist. "The tracklisting is of epic proportions and when people first look at it they may think its the modern day version of jive bunny, but Joris has gone to extreme lengths to layer, sample, loop, cut and edit tracks to create a landscape of sounds that people will really need to sit down and listen to fully appreciate the density and scope of this composition. The mix is far from conventional and we must acknowledge Joris as an artist who is pushing the musical boundaries trying to create something that is complex and subtle at the same time."

Licensing tracks for mix CDs can be a time consuming and sometimes unsatisfying business, and Tom explained this Balance release doesn't make an exception.

"There is a lot of negotiation and goodwill involved between labels when licensing music and it was a massive task to clear all the tracks for the CD and we always try hard to obtain all tracks that a DJ has requested to give the artist the best chance to deliver a mix that both parties will be happy with. We even cleared the Ripperton mix of Radiohead - 'Nude' exclusively for the compilation, which initially was only a bootleg version.

"There are always a couple of rejections with every compilation, but we can maintain a record of at least 96% clearances with each project we undertake.

"Balance is a series that relies on instinct and we always try to create a certain element of surprise and mystique with our releases. It's definitely quality over quantity."

Balance 014 will be released February 9th 2009 in Australia/Asia and March 9th in the rest of the world. Joris posted the full tracklisting on his MySpace blog.
