Can you describe an average working day during the production process? How long did it take you to Upset the Ducks?
''Upsets Ducks took me about 4 months. I locked myself in a room for two weeks to record almost all my live tracks from the last 2 years that haven't already been released. After that I just put it all together and added lots of new stuff. To not overproduce the album and maintain some kind of vintage sound, I decided to have a strict schedule and to finish it in a limited period of time. It forced me to keep all the sweet ideas from the beginning alive. Those often die if I work too long on something."
Do you feel your involvement with the label has its drawback on your creative musical output?
''Of course, my musical career and the label started at the same time and have always been interfering with each other. Basically Ada and Metope (Areal partners in crime) are a big influence to me and have always been. I think also the other way around. we created the "Areal sound" all together."
Tell us everything about those cool record sleeves.
"Well, every record gets its own drawing. A record; a drawing. I have lots of fun in keeping the childish, happy, unserious style of the label. For me as the painter and visualist of Areal, every record is also a paint job."
Upset Ducks - the title refers to Basteroid scaring the ducks living around the studio with his ponding basslines - is expected to hit the stores September 17th.
