ABOUT SAUCERS AND STATIC!

One time Eat Static watched a huge floating saucer flying directly above them. Now they're back to their roots of analogue synth madness!

Your debut album "Abduction" sort of shook planet Earth musically back in 1993. Compared to all the new dance stuff from those days it was like a spaced out trip into Orbit. Did you ever experience a close encounter with UFOs?
"Joie and I were always reading up on UFOlogy and somehow both our obsessions intertwined with the music we made, tracks always having that outer space/alien vibe about them - seems to be in our blood. It was funny to suddenly see the media all getting hyped up about things like the Roswell incident and shocking government documents becoming public.
"We did actually have a close encounter one night coming home from a gig, at around 5 in the morning on Salisbury Plain, where numerous army things go on and lots of sightings have happened over the years. It was pretty frightening at the time, as we watched a huge floating saucer fly to directly above us, with absolutely no sound going on - it just hovered there for a minute or two then floated away again. Our car had stopped, electrical failure and as the craft went off, the car started again.
"The new album sees us returning to the alien/sci-fi theme. We've gone back to our roots, more analogue synth madness and no organic guitars and stuff! Its called "De-Classified" for obvious reasons!"
You always rocked the stage with tons of hardware gear. As far as we can recall computers never were part of your setup. Today a band like Kraftwerk replaced all that with just four laptops. How about you?
"I never take computers on stage. For a start, they look pretty boring! I see so many dance acts stood around chatting on stage, probably discussing what they are having for dinner the next night. We come from a rock'n roll background so we deliver everything with passion and conviction and we do actually still enjoy going on stage, even after 20 years! I have a kind've telepathic thing with Joie on stage - we read each other. Kraftwerk get away with it cos they got class!"
