INTERVIEW: MOTH COMPLEX

Mon, June 18, 2007

"Every song comes from a situation or experience or feeling in my life. And Moth Complex is the biggest thing in my life and music and singing my complete passion, so it's really personal - the whole lot of it!"

In the studio Moth Complex is Aoife O'Leary and Gerry Owens. What chemistry is going on between the two of you?

"Yes, Gerry and I write the Moth Complex songs together. We're really good friends and he's a brilliant person. He's so gifted, musically, too. Once we started to work together, we were straight away on the same wavelength about what the music/songs would sound like and Moth Complex just took on a life of it's own. Also, we have similar approaches to work - we both get completely consumed and time just flies by. We forget about stuff like eating and everything else and all of a sudden it's the middle of the morning or something like that. It's really intensive but also great fun. And then at the end of it all it's so cool to sit back and listen to the song we've made and feel really good!"
On stage you're accompanied by Mark Galvin (bass) and Damien Murphy (drums) and your brother Ro (guitar). What is it you look for when playing live?

"Actually the live line up is Vin McCreith (bass), Damien Murphy (drums) and Ro O'Leary (guitar). Playing live is my favourite part of being in a band. I think what I look for when playing live is just to really enjoy it and be the absolute best I can be. I think live performance works best when you can put everything else aside and just get lost in it. Our songs are so fuelled and intense anyway that singing them live is really consuming and it's such a high! Plus, Damo, Vin and Ro are brilliant musicians and amazing people and we're all completely music obsessed, so it's really cool being in a band with them all and playing gigs. It's the best fun, and such a high. Do I always get that? Pretty much always, yeah. Even a tough gig is cool and generally, they're the ones you can really learn from, so they're really beneficial. But yeah, I always enjoy myself so it's all good!"

Your upcoming album "Core" has been ready since the end of 2006. What is keeping you from releasing it? Do you feel your current studio output (new tracks) has more potential?

"We haven't really felt in any rush to release "Core". We've decided to go with what feels right for us and have chosen to work largely on our live show and on other things and decide when the time feels right for us to release a CD. Gerry and I have written new songs that I'd like to include on the album, but now we have so many songs we have to narrow them down! Also we want to wait till we feel we have the backing we want to release the album and that's happening, so we'll just decide in our own time. Things have been moving really nicely, though, so we're happy!"
