JORIS VOORN INTERVIEW

"Many of the tracks I play as a DJ aren't six minute arrangements that you can mix one after the other."

On previous releases you've already experimented with breaking tracks up to rebuild them in a new fashion. With Balance 14 it seems you've gone all the way. Did you take a new angle here, or was it an evolutionary step?

"It was a mix of different things, I didn’t intend to go so deep into the edits when I started, but along the way it was just inevitable to cut deeper and deeper. It’s a different way of approaching the music, allowing for more creativity in the mixing process."

What are you looking for when breaking up tracks and combining them with others?

"It’s about looking for the perfect combination of samples or tracks, where melodies complement each other or grooves work great together. Many tracks of the mix are created out of loops from different songs, so basically they are something completely new.

"That process is very time consuming though, and there’s a lot of trial and error involved."

How was working with Stomp? Are they different compared to the other labels out there?

"They are a very well organized company and did everything they could do to make the CD to a success. They worked on clearance of over a hundred tracks without a single complaint - haha!

"I've worked with NEWS for my Fuse Presents mix before, and they were very professional as well. It’s important to work with the best, because you want all the tracks that make the mix stand out - and they’re not always easy to get."
