INTERVIEW: MICROMATTIC'S NICK SEIZOV!

"That is why Matt and I thought it about time to come with something that's interactive and fun to watch at the same time. We found a way to hack into the Nintendo Wii wireless remote control and managed to hook it up to our software in order to manipulate sounds and images through movement. Needless to say we instantly fell in love with it! Shaping electronic sounds with your hands is really a great way to create music. It feels almost like playing an instrument. You really need to master your movements for advanced sound acrobatics. We can control any element or sound effect parameter in our music with the Wii remote and create something spontaneous on stage that is different every time. Matt is still working on a piece of code for controlling Ableton Live through a USB floor mat and two Wii remotes. This way he'll be able to do live sequencing with his feet while modulating effects with his hands without ever looking at the computer screen!"

Under Over TheClouds - when will it be finished?
"I hope soon, really. This is my first video project and I didn't really imagine that it would consume such a massive part of my time and energy. We first decided to shoot a music video. This turned into experimental short film and it now seems we have been shooting a soap opera!

"Coming up with the idea, assembling the team, building the sets, shooting, editing and so on has been a long process. We hardly had any budget and all team members are only able to work on it in their spare time. We also decided to make the two stage sets out of recyclable materials which is no easy job either. An MTV video probably takes no longer than couple weeks to make. What a contrast with everything we had to go through for the same four minutes of screen time! But we certainly had loads of fun in doing it. Another funny thing is that the project was originally inspired by a music piece I wrote a year ago. But after we finished the video shoot last summer, the images inspired me to write new music for it, which we're using in the final version. We are now cutting the first video edit to the new sound so we are very close to finishing it. We will be launching Under Over The Clouds in the coming months with a really interesting premiere event in London. So look out for it on our website underovertheclouds.org."

Take us 10 years ahead. What do you hope to be looking back at?
"I hope all hardware has gone wireless because I am really tired of rewiring my studio every time I play live. I also wish to be making music without being chained to a chair in a room. I really hate working on a desk. With a computer interface in my brain I can write songs while riding my bike in the mountains, swimming underwater or birdwatching in the countryside. I believe that only the complete integration between man and machine can free us from the gear slavery and allow electronic musicians to be more creative. Imagine if you can draw your inspiration from all kinds of environments and experiences rather than looking for a muse in the corner of your bedroom.
