"phAxas shares the phonetic pronounciation as my surname given to me by my organic family at birth. I changed the first two letters to "ph" in order to create a visual connection to my supplementary or Arma family. The "ph" also represents the phoenix which is a mythical bird that periodically burns itself and then rises from its ashes in order to regenerate and live through another cycle. The "A" in all our names is symbolic of a triangle or the union of two that creates a third."
What is it you Arma guys have have with music? Who are you inspired by?
"We have oscillated since we were kids from Djs, club dancers, school choruses, band members, engineers, composers, performers and producers. Anything that relates to music inspires us. We have been influenced by artists from the likes of Miles Davis, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Plastikman, Orbital, Underworld, Rabbit in the Moon, Tricky, Portishead, Villalobos, Prodigy, Mouse on Mars, Herbert, FischerSpooner, Roni Size, Modeselektor and Uberzone (to name a few). Groove and electronica with a lyrical content is how we use our influences."
Do you believe a remix is just as good a work of art as is the original?
"We do not compare based on separations of good from evil :) For us, there is no need to differentiate between an original composition and a remix. We are willing to take them and do both. The challenges and methods of performance are so dissimilar, that
