The Demix Interview

THE DEMIX INTERVIEW

"I can't just listen to one song on a record - it's like I need to hear what was made to come before and after it or else I feel empty."

What actually is 'Experimental' music - and how does yours fit in?

"I would say "experimental music" is any type of music that pushes boundaries of what is considered the norm or standard in that specific genre. It is also the way an instrument is played or used. I have a very hard time describing my stuff to people, I really don't know what to call it other than experimental electronic music - it's kind of a cop-out to be honest. Ha!

"It is largely sample based, there are some beats here and there, and lots of moody ambience. I love to create head pounding walls of noise by making my toys make sounds they shouldn't. My general set up is turntables, samplers, drum machines, effects all run through a dj mixer and then into my laptop for further destruction."

Why are you a fan of NIN?

"NIN is what turned me on to Industrial/Electronic music way back when and I've always been a fan. As now we sit here today Trent Reznor & NIN are not only still going - but going stronger than ever and putting out amazing music. Everything they are doing is blowing my mind. Not just the music he's put out the past couple years, but everything that has gone with it. The alternate reality created for Year Zero, giving away Ghosts & The Slip, saying fuck you to major labels. And somehow finding the time to produce Saul Williams record which is one of my favorite things ever.

"I just saw them a couple weeks ago, the stage show rivals that of Daft Punk's great pyramid - it's incredible. I think we all can learn a lot from Trent & NIN."
