WHO IS DER TANTE RENATE?

Sun, October 22, 2006

"Althought these tracker programs were very limited, I liked the things I could do with them. I then played in several punk/hardcore bands (Loxiran, Chispa, Engrave if anyone is interested) and continued to do weird electronic stuff on my Amiga and on my first PC.

"At some point I found all this hardcore shit similar and kind of boring (which does not mean that I don't understand why people still like it!!) and after my bands split up I just kept on producing (still crappy) music on my pc and improved it since then (hopefully). I did my first show in 2002 or 2003 (I can´t recall) with my new bought 80s synthie and my guitar. And since then I´ve been playing many shows and been working on that. My work together with audiolith rec. also started pretty early.

"This guy, Lars, released my CD "Shecter" and "666 deluxe" (LP) which run pretty well and being in the audiolith network with all the other crazy guys from that label is just awesome."

Live on stage "Der Tante Renate" is you with a guitar, some synths and a microphone, right? Also there's a laptop accompanying you. What do you use it for?
"I use my laptop for several things: First of all I do the beats with it. So that's just the background shit with some beeps or bass. Then I control several software synthesizers, which are partly commercial, partly self programmed with Reaktor. I also use several usb controllers to start some sounds and so on. I use a virtual guitar rig to play the guitar through the laptop, so I don't need to take any heavy equipment with me. (except for the 80s synthie which I still use). And I have some nice filter effects and phasing/flanging ect. that I use live. But that's just for some weird parts."

Do you use computers differently when producing a track in the studio?
"The way I use the laptop on stage differs completely from the way I use my desktop PC in the studio. The desktop is mainly for arranging songs and producing the beats and all other sounds which are useful to the song. After the song is complete, I reduce it to some tracks and export it, so I can use it live by playing the missing tracks. And that's generally it. Of course I use a lot of softsynths. They are so easy to handle and some even offer the opportunity to change the signal processing structure. They speed up my producing process. And, of course, you can use as many of them as your computer is able to compute!"

I hear one of your shows had to move to another venue in another city because the lack of beer.... how come? :)
"This was all just crap. I still don't know what the real reason was, but I felt I had to write some trash as an excuse for this and it worked out pretty good. You should've attended the show which was set up instead. It was just awesome!"
