EINSTUERZENDE NEUBAUTEN "ALLES WIEDER OFFEN"

Speaking in terms of sound: Will the new album have more sound or more silence?

"Answering questions like this I hope it’s sound will put you to silence! It contains more than fifty minutes of fantastic music!"

The new album title "Alles Wieder Offen" (It's all Open Again) suggests a new start. Does that imply things have been "not so open" for a while - or is it a referal to the start of an era where we can expect Einstürzende Neubauten to rock laptops instead of self-made instruments?

"The title does not merrily suggest a new start. When something is 'open' it is also unprotected or unsolved and given a unlimited variety of choices one sometimes feels squashed by the unbearable pressure in having to take the responsibility of making a decision. So, 'not open' could also provide a certain amount of security. Like it is definitely safer to close your laptop before you make a run for the bus, which you might just miss anyway."

"Alles Wieder Offen" will be the first major release without the backing of a commercial label. What does that mean to you?

"It has it’s good and bad sides, but if you think of it, the advantages of working with the industry have been devastatingly diminished in the past years as it is. True, we didn’t get an advance, we have to afford promotion on our own, we will not receive any tour-support and we don’t get to use a monopolized distribution network, but which group of our format does these days?

"And artistic freedom? We always had that. Our work would be impossible otherwise."

At least one thing is clear now: Don't expect these oldsters to rock laptops! Yet Einstürzende Neubauten rocks. Being upfront avantgardists in terms of sound for over 25 years, now they are setting new standards for how to run a band without a label!

The new album? Well, we'd say "Alles wieder offen" has enough silence for all instruments to stand out individually and enough sound to make a loud acoustic impact. If you're a music head and open for something different, Einstürzende Neubauten is definitely a band you can surprise yourself with.

"The face. The church. Society and the state. The microphone. The sky. The relationship. The word. The open prison. It’s all open again."

The booklet with German Lyrics includes English translations:)
