Did technology influence the way you work and the music you make?
"Yeah, technology is a huge part of the process. Well now, writing and recording exist simultaneously. It's kind of like writing a novel. The ideas don't get jotted down as quickly as that because it takes time to make the right sound, but it's at least very easy to put a sketch down. And once the direction of the song takes shape, I can go back and really work on the sounds and textures. It's important to learn the vocabulary first just like with writing literature, but there are endless possibilities, and it's nice to not have to be limited to the sounds of a specific instrument.
"It’s also great that it's possible to realize a full sonic arrangement in my bedroom. I've found that the danger is that it can be overused/misused. It's all about balance. The most important thing is what is best for the song."
What's your vision or opinion about the "digital (music) world" we live in. Is it full of "Strangers"?
"Perhaps it has always been full of “strangers”. Anyone can make music now, and have somewhere to put it. The internet is such a vast space and there is certainly so much more material to sift through. But at the same time it’s more readily accesible which I believe is a good thing. It’s even possible to collaborate with other musicians thousands of miles away. I could easily start a song, and then send the file out to someone across the sea who can add to it, and then send it back almost immediately. It's all great. Digitalization seems like a natural progression. Unfortunately, the big heads with all the money always find a way to ruin things."
What's your goal for 2007?
"I'm trying to connect with my family roots a bit more, and hopefully it'll lead to more clarity with my writing. And I just wanna be able to have enough to eat, and have a place and way to keep working on the music. The band is another thing. We're really working hard on the live arrangements so more shows this year is a goal. And I'm really happy with how the EP is turning out, so I'm hoping that the wheels keep going because the album is definitely in the works."
