Indaba Music has launched a new remix contest with none other than the great Fela Kuti, who was known as a pioneer of Afrobeat music. We're also a big fan of his work and performances. Check this video and get inspired as well :)
Fela Kuti redefined the direction of African music with his Afrobeat bands. The broadway musical, which was Executively Produced by Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith, and Jay-Z, is a powerful and moving show. In "I.T.T." (International Thief Thief), Fela is satirizing "International Telephone and Telegraph", upon whom he launches a scathing attack -and whose executive Moshood Abiola also owned Fela's label Decca at the time- for their corruption and prodding of Nigerian politics.
Grand Prize Winner of the contest will receive an Apple iPad, a Fela! Original Cast Recording CD, a Fela Kuti catalog of 20 CDs, a Fela! T-Shirt, and will have their mix released officially by Fela Cast Recordings. Runners-Up will also win fantastic prizes.
The judges are Brian Long, Rikki Stein and Vanessa Wruble who are all strong connected to Fela Kuti. Either from being his ex-manager to a consultant at Knitting Factory Records, the record label that looks after his catalog. Deadline for the Fela Kuti Remix Contest is October 28, 2010.
Fela's son Femi Kuti also held a remix contest in 2009.
