Patrick Flanagan is the front man of a robot band! With the help of two Wiimotes Patrick plays several roles. He improvises on one or two machines, controlling every note that they play; he triggers and loops material and shapes its overall character - and he interacts his machines by playing one and allowing another to improvise a response of its own. Before the band - named Jazari - was set in place Patrick developed a music learning and generation algorithm called Factor Oracle. This algorithm allowed his computer to extrude new music based on statistical patterns in bebop solos, Stevie Wonder songs, and Slayer guitar riffs. Patrick began building bodies for his agents in late 2008. One year later he had machines that played the djembe drum, the bongos, and a variety of hand percussion instruments. Prior to working on Jazari, Patrick earned a Master’s degree in music composition at the University of Minnesota. jazarimusic.com |
