Algostep, or algorithmic dubstep, is a form of algorithmic music: sound generated by or inspired by automated process. You can create such music with SuperCollider, an environment and programming language for real time audio synthesis and algorithmic composition. It provides an interpreted object-oriented language which functions as a network client to a state of the art, realtime sound synthesis server.
SuperCollider was written by James McCartney over a period of many years, and is now an open source (GPL) project maintained and developed by various people. It is used by musicians, scientists, and artists working with sound.
ChordPunch is a record label dedicated to algorithmic music. Chordpunch artist Kiti le Step has put the source code online for their latest generative algostep production "Meister Submarine." It’s SuperCollider code which you can run to generate a new random track every time. You can remix the code or remix the audio stems wich are also available for download. Apart from dubstep, Kiti’s influences include hip-hop and old-fashioned rave, and some other random things. Their EP CP0x06 is released for free download.
A panel of fully algorithmic music critics will judge the entries. Kode Fine, Critex and Judge Rules are respectively from the dubstep, over-commercialized-dubstep and generally-overpaid-DJ communities and will determine the amazingness of each entry using a proprietary amount of artificial intelligence. The panel are entirely automated and will not be wrong :)
Novation have kindly offered three Launchpads as prizes. To enter the contest please submit an audio file of your remix before 1st April 2012.
