O Superman, may be just two simple words. Yet the melody line of Laurie Anderson's greatest hit (1981) immediately will start echoing inside the heads of many electronic music lovers. Check a young Laurie Anderson performing a variation on that song from her home in 1982 on YouTube here.
Associated with high profile avant-garde artists like Philip Glass, Frank Zappa, John Zorn, John Cage, and of course her now (2008) husband Lou Reed - Laurie never turned away from experimentation since she started performing in the 1970's. For her performances Laurie has developed her own special violin, using electronic tape in place of traditional strings.
In collaboration with Indaba, Lauri Anderson invites you to have a go with the stems of her new spoken-word electronic song "Only an Expert" from her forthcoming album Homeland. Combining poetry and concert, Homeland started out as a series of live performances, and the songs are now being released by Nonesuch Records as an album. Being Laurie's first official release since 2002, Homeland touches upon several of the current political trends in the United States.
Not limited to music and poetry, Laurie is also sending her message to the world as an active visual artist, photographer and filmmaker.
It's now your turn to take Laurie Anderson's music and use it to send out your own special message!
The best remix will be featured as an exclusive track on the iTunes release of Laurie's upcoming album. You have until May 13th. And no, that's not a Fiday :)
