BEATPORT'S PAUL VAN DYK CONTEST: VOTING HAS BEGUN

Thu, June 05, 2008

Public voting has just begun, but as voting has been tempered with in the past at other remix competitions we're keen to know what's going on, and checked in few times ourselves. Here are the tricks of the trade!

Beatport probably made its voting system as robust as possible. But regardless what they might have done with cookies, logging IP numbers and the need of being logged in to make your Spin (as a vote is called by Beatport) - only a few days after voting started some remarkable things surfaced already.

Most remarkable fact probably is that we've seen quite some tracks having more Spins than plays. Assuming Beatport's player has a decent counter - this is something! Voting without listening? That's something we expect to happen at the US Presidential elections, but come on - at Beatport?

Making trades is an easy way to get votes, you could just post a comment you voted for someone's track and "expect" to get a spin in return. Some who successfully became "most commented" before voting started obviously used these tactics with success. Remember only minutes after you posted your remix, you received this nice comment how special your track was? Sharks :)

So seeing a track with a lot of spins as well as a lot of comments, there's a fair chance the person behind that track posted a lot of comments fishing for votes. That's easy to find out, just check the profile!

Another thing we've seen is Spins going down at certain profiles, in stead of going up or staying put! Is Beatport having their own secret service checking misbehavior and making corrections? Or is it something wrong by accident?

Whatever. Just don't take voting too seriously. Winning a contest is cool of course - but that doesn't make you a superstar. Best thing Beatport did is that 30 tracks will be eventually sent to Vandit for consideration: 15 decided by public voting and 15 picked by themselves. So if the track with most Spins turns out to be totally shite - there's no harm done. So better just trust your talents and don't just rely on the number of votes you get!

Commenting and voting is fun, and a good way to make new friends or even start a collaboration. Just ignore those who are too keen on getting your vote.

Remember the good old days at MySpace? With all those bulletins called "whore trains" to get you tons of friends effortless? Time for action! Happy spinning.
