The Rova Saxophone Quartet is one of the longest-standing groups in the music movement that has its roots in post-bop, free jazz, avant-rock, and 20th century new music. Drawing inspiration from the visual arts and from the traditional and popular music styles of Africa, Asia, Europe and the United States, Rova explores the synthesis of composition and collective improvisation, creating exciting, genre-bending music.
Founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in October 1977, the all-saxophone ensemble can look back on a career with many highlights, including appearances at the Yokohama Jazz Promenade in Japan, the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Ulrichsberg Festival in Austria, Novara Jazz in Italy and the Rive-de-Gier festival in France, and the triumphant 30th anniversary presentation of John Coltrane's Ascension in San Francisco, to mention just a few.
They have collaborated with the biggest names from the jazz music scene, and the list of composers who have written music for Rova is long and illustrious.
To celebrate Rova’s upcoming 33⅓ Anniversary concert with special guests DJ Olive and DJ P-Love, and to celebrate the release of The Receiving Surfaces, a limited edition live LP of last summer’s landmark collaboration with John Zorn, they've made the tracks from their recording of Steve Adam’s piece “Flip Trap” available to you to rethink, remix, and manipulate as you’d like.
Deadline for submissions: 31st July 2011.
