WHY THE NEW NIN ALBUM IS ONE HUNDRED PERCENT FREE

Mon, May 26, 2008

Some might wonder if the guy went insane by giving away an album he could have easily sold in large quantities. But take in mind the industry is changing and change always opens up for new business models and new ways to earn money. The $300 Ultra-DeLuxe limited edition Package of Ghosts - of which 2500 copies were available - was sold out from the NIN website in less than a day! That is a serious amount of money.

Besides that, it's not all about money. The music industry has been focusing on just making profit for too long a period - in fact that is one of the main reasons why the ship started sinking in the first place. Fans are willing to pay - the above is proof of that. But fans don't want artificial bands created by a record company for the sake of profit. Fans want dedicated artists making music because that is what they do. A product made just for the purpose of selling it seldom can be qualified as art, being the creative output of an artist.

Whatever you might think of Trent Reznor's music - he has the kind of fans the recording industry is dreaming about. And that is why he says, "Thank you for your continued and loyal support over the years - this one's on me."

In case you already downloaded The Slip in hi-resolution audio some time ago, and experienced some problems - it was in the files. The flaw has been fixed and new files have been posted.
