A chimera is essentially a 'thing' created from at least two sets of parents. In ancient mythology a chimera had the head of a lion, the body of a goat and the behind of a snake.
Chimera Synthesis is a UK based company that designs and manufactures übercool micro synthesizers.
On their website company founder BC (aka Benjamin C. Fisher) says, "Our use of chimera is derived from it's 'genetic' meaning - a single organism with genetically distinct cells from two different zygotes.
"This refers to the underlying concepts behind our products. Analog filters, digital oscillators, patch cords, DSPs, vacuum tubes & surface mount, wood, plastic and iron and titanium - our products are chimeras."
Their current productline consists of three products. The bC8 is a synthesizer/sequencer that easily fits in the palm of your hands. The bC16 is just a bit bigger and delivers a fully patchable anolog synth that can be played over MIDI (see video next page). The SM16 features an analog sequencer.
There's another product in development called pH303 - no hard guess what that is! On the user forum BC writes, "Physically it is not round but 'rounded', it is similar in size to the SM16. You can create clone like 303 sounds if you want - it has all the controls the TB-303 has and a whole lot more besides. The two really '303' elements we wanted to keep were the filter and the VCA/VCF interactions. We have done some of this using hardware and some in software."
