Rough Rider definitely is not an all-purpose compressor. According to its maker, Audio Damage, Rough Rider is at its best when used to add pump to rhythmic tracks. Of course, you can use it however you'd like. The Compressor Police aren't gonna come to your house and give you a citation you should use it on your drum buss ;)
Slap it on a track and crank some knobs. Its controls are straight forward as any other compressor - but don't expect too precise a response. Rough Rider is an effect with an edge rather than a classic compressor. Using it on a stereo mix, it can add a touch of darkness when the sound has a sharp edge or seems a bit thin. It can also add a vintage style bite and a some warmth to synth bass, clean guitar, and backing vocals.
Rough Rider is made by Audio Damage and is available as a VST effect for Windows, and an AU or VST for OSX. And it's free for you to get!
Like all of their products, the VST version has MIDI Learn - download any manual from Audio Damage's current product line for an explanation of how this works, as it is common among all their VST products.
Available from the link below there are two more free plugins by Audio Damage. PulseModulator is a model of a rare tremolo pedal from the 70s, and FuzzPlus is a distortion pedal model cloned from a vintage fuzz pedal.
