This new augmented music app from the makers of RjDj features 8 scenes which all play in the reactive minimal techno domain with a twist on microphone input. Crazy!

London based Kids on DSP has been working closely with artists Carl Craig and Acid Pauli on a new iPhone application as the sequel of the popular RjDj app from Reality Jockey. This augmented music app turned the iPhone’s microphone into an audio synthesizer. Now it's been taken even further with the new 'Kids on DSP' app (DSP stands for Digital Signal Processing).

The Kids on DSP app features 8 scenes (Urban25, Timecruising, Departures, Dimensions, Doppelganger, DrowningStreet and We are listening) which all play in the reactive minimal techno domain with a twist on microphone input. The Kids on DSP make the acoustic surrounding of the listener seamless integrated with their minimal techno beats in real-time. They take mixing and sampling culture into a new dimension.

Carl Craig
For example, the music in the 'TimeCruising' scene is based on Carl Craig’s techno classic 'Landcruising' (from 1995). But instead of cruising through land they take a dubby cruise through time. Microphone input is swirling around your head. After a while there is a point in the scene where parts of the music and your environment starts sucking backwards in time. In fact you hear reality backwards in real-time!

According to TheAppleBlog, Reality Jockey producer Robert Thomas believes RjDj will offer a better strategy by selling albums that weave a musician’s work into an immersive, interactive experience that goes beyond mere listening. Very interesting!

If you would like to make reactive music yourself, download one of these two apps. It's beyond fun. You can even use a special composer to make a scene and share it with the world on the RjDj website. There are even events organized where artists, musicians, composers and developers are invited to create RjDj scenes and do other mad things with sound. These are called RjDj Sprints.

The Kids on DSP app is available from the App Store. Click the link below for a video interview with Kids on DSP about Carl Craig and the production of the 'TimeCruising' scene for the app.
