Laptop Road Map revealed for OLPC’s XO-computer

OLPC REVEALS XO LAPTOP ROAD MAP

OLPC announced that new versions of the revolutionary XO, once known as the "$100 laptop", will be available in 2012. It's a fantasy gadget and just too good to be true!

Earlier this week, One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) announced its product road map to deliver robust laptop performance and innovative design for use in the most remote, poor and rural communities and at the lowest power and cost in the industry.

“To fulfill our mission of reaching 500 million children in all remote corners of the planet, OLPC will continue to innovate in design and performance. Because we are a non-profit, we hope that industry will copy us.”

“The first version of OLPC’s child-centric laptop, the XO, is a revolution in low-cost, low-power computing. The XO has been distributed to more than 1.4 million children in 35 countries and in 25 languages,” said Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of One Laptop per Child. “To fulfill our mission of reaching 500 million children in all remote corners of the planet, OLPC will continue to innovate in design and performance. Because we are a non-profit, we hope that industry will copy us.”

The new versions of the XO laptop will be the XO 1.5, XO 1.75 and XO 3.0. OLPC announced that the XO 3.0 will be vailable in 2012 and at a target price well below $100.

Skepticism
A lot of people are skeptic about this fantasy tablet because it's unrealistic that a low-cost laptop like the XO can be produced with these hardware specs. XO 3.0 is said to be highly durable, all plastic, waterproof, half the thickness of an iPhone and use less than a watt of power, with an 8-gigaherz processor.

Let's just wait and see!

In the meantime, watch the special TV ad to support OLPC's Give One, Get One program from last year, featuring Beatles legend John Lennon.
