Nicholas Negropont, the man behind the One Laptop Per Child project (OLPC), has unveiled a plan to drop his low-cost tablet computer from helicopters to locations outside of remote villages. The XO-3 tablet (image) was developed by the One Laptop per Child Association and was funded with $5.6 million from the Marvell Technolgy Group. The XO-3 will be powered by a 1GHz SoC from Marvell, a touchscreen and runs on solar power! The whole idea of laptop dropping is interesting. Techland.Time reports: "The idea is that the kids from these villages would essentially find the tablets outside, take them home, and start learning. This is partly based on the findings Dr. Sugata Mitra's "Hole in the Wall" experiments, in which he and his colleagues installed an internet-enabled PC in a hole in the wall in an Indian slum and monitored how the kids taught themselves how to use it." |
