FOR WIIZKIDS: THE WIINSTRUMENT

"The idea of creating an application for the Wii that is suitable for real percussion music came up during some sessions with Rayman Raving Rabbids, one of the first games available for the Wii."

Ever wanted to have a cheap external MIDI controller that's wireless? Or to play a groovy drum loop in your sequencer without having to set note delays manually? No matter if you're a Mac, Windows or Linux freak, the Wiinstrument might be the perfect tool for you to do it!

We talked to Sebastian Burkhart about this cool new application, his love for the Wii and of course the lovely Wiimote and Nunchuk controllers.

Tell us about the Wiinstrument! How does it work?

"The Wiinstrument is basically an application that enables you to use your Wii remote for air drumming and controlling MIDI equipment by rotating your controllers. You can use it to control your DJ setup, guitar effects hardware, Ableton Live, or other MIDI compatible equipment on live gigs, or just to create groovy drum patterns in a sequencer.

"To achieve this, we make use of the built-in acceleration sensors in the controllers. When you're beating your Wii remote in the air, The Wiinstrument recognizes your beats and their intensity and converts it into MIDI notes.

"And even if you don't accelerate the devices yourself, there is another force that is constantly accelerating them towards the bottom: Gravity. By measuring the direction of this force, the Wiinstrument recognizes the tilt angles of your controllers and enables you to control any MIDI effect or instrument parameter just with a rotation of the device in your hand - or of your e-guitar with the Wii remote attached to it, if you prefer."
