This guarantees that in the future it will *always* be possible for *anyone* to pick up from some point in VC development and continue it or to make their own flavour of it. The GPL also guarantees that VC will always be available for free, even if I or someone else decides to make a commercial derivative later on.
"The day the source code to Buzz got lost was a very sad day and there was absolutely nothing anyone could do. We'd just had an updated version of Buzz released and suddenly everyone realised there would *never* be another one. By publishing not just the application but also all of the files that go together to make it, I'm making sure this can't happen to my little corner of the scene again.
"The GPL also protects me from users by making it very clear that the software is not guaranteed to work in any way and that it was never provided as a commercial product - this is important so a technologically-challenged judge or lawyer can understand that I'm simply doing something I enjoy and that I can't be held responsible for other people's decisions to examine my software.
"So in a nutshell, I always wanted to make VC free, but by doing it as a GPL project on SourceForge I get access to all kinds of free services for hosting and developing the software, as well as protecting the rights of myself and my users for now and for the future."
Why the name?
"If you've noticed, the L is capitalised - The LET is from waveLETs. The name was decided by asking suggestions from users. Of course people came up with tons of 'cool' acronyms like 'S.I.N.E' or 'R.A.P.E' with equally dodgy meanings, but when someone suggested VioLet Composer I knew that it was a name you could not forget and that I wouldn't regret if it one day became common.
"I'll finish up by saying that VC desperately needs help from enthusiastic and skilled people. The last 'stable' release of VC had nearly two thousand downloads, but I didn't get a single bug-report, feature-request or even an email or comment - and I now *know* there were major bugs in it."
Well ... this guy likes to crap on, and can talk about himself for ages. He wouldn’t stop before making a point of thanking Syntarn, Zenakuten, James Nichols and Christoph Schunk who have been his major contributors of feedback, Buzz support, VioLet icons and custom GUI controls respectively. Without these guys VC would not be where it is today.
Finally, Aaron mentioned *nobody* has *ever* written him a tune or a plug-in for VC. So get instant fame here! VC is dual core friendly for those of you rocking Core Duo laptops :)
